SMALL GAME HUNT IN BULGARIA
Many hunters underestimate small game hunt, but it also brings great satisfaction and adrenaline. Bulgarian hunting areas offer individual and group hunting of pheasants (Korean and Mongolian), grey and rock partridge, migratory birds: quail, turtle-dove, wood pigeon, woodcock, various kind of ducks (mallard, garganey and common teal) and wild goose.
The season for a small game hunt in Bulgaria starts with wild pigeon and turtle-dove hunting at the beginning of August on large agricultural lands sown with cereals cut by forest strips and water channels.
Some hunting areas along the Danube River offer successful hunting of wild ducks and geese from the beginning of October till the end of January.
Pheasant hunting begins in early October and ends in late January. Along with the wild pheasant, farm-reared pheasants can be hunted in selected areas up to the end of February. Individual hunting is usually organized for hunters with their own dogs, and group hunting is conducted with 2-8 hunters with trained local bird hunting dogs and professional guides who know the area well and work daily there.
Hares can be hunted together with any of the abovementioned species.
Woodcock can be hunted in Bulgarian seacoast above which passes Via Pontica – the second largest migration route of birds nesting in northeastern Europe and flying south to Africa in the winter. Every spring and autumn 78 % of all white storks in Europe, the entire European population of white pelicans, thousands of raptors, waterfowl and songbirds fill the invisible sky highway Via Pontica. Some of them stop to rest and then continue their journey. Woodcock remains in Bulgaria for the winter, but rarely nests here and by the end of April all woodcocks have already left the country. Many feathered game hunters have a great passion about this bird, no matter that it’s hunting is very challenging as woodcock is very sensitive to weather conditions and, if the temperatures change significantly, it can fly away 400 to 500 km in a single night and simply disappear.
Recommended calibers for small game hunt: 12, 16 and 20.
