Best time for roebuck hunting is the opening of the season in May when animals are very active, the weather is not too hot and the vegetation haven`t grown too high yet.
The usual way of hunting is stalking or waiting twice per day – very early in the morning and in the afternoon until dusk. May-June is a very appropriate time for selective hunt of males who are sick or have weak body or trophy which are good to be harvested before the start of the breeding season.
Optimum time for trophy hunt is during the breeding season from the second half of July till beginning of August which is quite an exciting experience. The hunt continues up to the end of October, when however it`s much more difficult but is usually combined with other game species.
Trophies` qualities:
The average trophy weight in Bulgaria is 300 – 350 gr., but as it is the red deer, roebuck`s size varies from its habitat – it`s 250 to 400 gr. in mountains areas and 400 to 550-600 gr. in lowlands and plains.
Trophies are paid according to the weight in grams, deducting 90 grams for the upper jaw.
Duration of hunting:
Minimum 3-4 days of hunting has to be planned if you intend to get 2-3 normal sized roebucks. Usually, 1 trophy per day in mountain ranges and 1-2-3 in flat areas are possible to be bagged.
Combination with other species:
Possible options for combo hunt are mouflon, wild boar, red deer, fallow deer, capercaillie, predators and small game.
