EUROPEAN BISON (Bison Bonasus L.)
Voden-Iri Hissar is the only place in Bulgaria where the largest terrestrial mammal in Europe can be hunted.
In the early 20th century, due to the extinction and loss of habitats, the bison disappeared from the wildlife in Europe. In Bulgaria it disappeared in the Middle Ages. Following extensive selection and reintroduction of individuals grown indoors, wild bison populations have been restored in Central and Eastern Europe. In the 1960s, a small herd of bison was reintroduced to Voden-Iri Hissar hunting ground, where it is making a remarkable recovery.
