Hunting became an organized movement in Bulgaria and was regulated by law in the 19th century. Due to the care of the game, the observation of its population, hunting seasons have been established, forest and hunting farms, forest grounds and preserves have been established where big and small game are grown.
In the seventies of the twentieth century began the rapid development of the international hunting tourism, as a form of alternative tourism.
For the purpose of international hunting tourism, a wide network of hunting lodges, shelters, chalets has been built, comprising about 110 hunting lodges and huts with more than 1100 beds, serviced by highly qualified staff and hunting guides.
The first few hunting farms in Bulgaria were established between 1928 and 1932. Over the years, the development of the hunting sector in Bulgaria goes through different stages and inevitably changes. In 2001, 38 state-owned game breeding stations were established from the previous structures. Their main purpose is to care for the restoration and multiplication of the game in our forests and to create conditions for the growth of populations with excellent trophy qualities.
Outside the forest fund, the development of the game, its conservation and the hunting tourism are carried out by the Bulgarian Hunters and Fishermen’s Associations and local hunting unions. In the last years, hunting grounds of individuals and legal entities on concession or other legal forms have been established too.
